Katri Behm from VTT, Finland – a key partner in the OXIPRO project – recently showcased an innovative approach to sustainable sunscreen solutions at the SETAC Europe 26th Life Cycle Assessment Symposium, in Gothemburg, Sweden. Representing the project, Katri’s poster: ‘Decreased ecotoxicity impacts of sun care products with laccase-based solutions’ presented a pioneering case study on decreasing ecotoxicity in sun care products.
Traditional sunscreens contain UV filters that, when washed into water bodies, harm aquatic ecosystems. The OXIPRO project is tackling this challenge by developing laccase-based, biocatalytic synthesis to produce melanin-like polymers, offering a safer alternative. The LCA study highlighted a comparison of these eco-friendly UV filters with conventional ones, using LCA and EF3.1 methodologies to assess the potential environmental impact reduction.
Using the SULCA-tool, this groundbreaking research opens pathways for safer, more sustainable consumer products, reflecting the OXIPRO project’s dedication to green innovation.
Speaking about her participation in the three-day event, Katri said:
“Presenting at the SETAC Europe LCA Symposium was an inspiring experience. It’s so motivating to see such a broad range of industries and experts come together with a shared commitment to advancing life cycle assessment. The symposium’s focus on meaningful data and impactful decision-making aligns perfectly with OXIPRO’s mission. Being able to showcase our work on oxidoreductase assisted production of eco-friendly UV filters for sunscreens and discuss the technical and environmental aspects and challenges related to chemicals and their modelling with peers was invaluable. This event not only provided a platform for us to share our progress but also reinforced the importance of collaboration in driving sustainable solutions forward.”
