New Policy Brief Urges EU Action to Unlock the Power of Enzyme Technologies

Integrating Enzyme Technologies into EU Policy Frameworks

A new policy brief, Integrating Enzyme Technologies into EU Policy Frameworks, has been published and is now available on Zenodo (https://zenodo.org/records/15148731). Drawing insights from the FNR-16 projects — EnXylaScope, FuturEnzyme, OXIPRO, and RadicalZ — alongside extensive stakeholder and consumer surveys, the brief sets out a clear roadmap for leveraging enzyme innovations to drive Europe’s green and digital transition.

Enzyme technologies are revolutionising industries by providing sustainable, efficient, and non-toxic alternatives to conventional chemical-based processes. They directly support key European Union strategies, including the European Green Deal, the Circular Economy Action Plan, the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework, and the Clean Industrial Deal. Yet, despite their promise, regulatory inconsistencies — particularly outdated chemical classifications — are holding back the wider adoption of enzyme-based solutions.

The policy brief highlights the economic, environmental, and societal benefits of enzymes and identifies pressing regulatory barriers, particularly under the REACH regulation. It calls for immediate action to adapt EU regulatory frameworks to fully harness the potential of enzyme technologies as sustainable alternatives to conventional chemicals.

Key recommendations include:

  • Modernising REACH: Recognising enzymes’ specific properties through case-by-case risk assessments rather than blanket classifications.
  • Enhancing the SSbD framework: Ensuring that environmental and socio-economic benefits are evaluated alongside safety.
  • Accelerating approvals: Creating fast-track regulatory pathways and easing the burden on SMEs.
  • Strengthening investment: Supporting enzyme innovation through dedicated funding, research hubs, and industrial transition initiatives.
  • Boosting public awareness: Promoting understanding of the safety and benefits of enzyme-based products.

By aligning regulations with scientific evidence and sustainability goals, the EU has the opportunity to position enzyme technologies as key enablers of a competitive, low-carbon economy.
